Deerfield Recital Series 2009-2010
by DPC ~ September 6th, 2009
Friday, September 25th, 7:30PM
Our series begins with an exciting evening of music for brass quintet. Artisans in Brass is a group of distinguished Christian musicians from around the country. Members Rick Nicholls, horn, Fred Powell and George Dougherty, trumpets, David Brown, bass trombone and Philip Golson, tuba, come together to play many concerts each year. Their repertoire includes classical, sacred and popular music. This is the first opportunity to hear the group perform in South Jersey and trumpet player George Dougherty, has family roots in this area. His grandmother taught for years at Seabrook School, and was featured in the book and documentary video about the school that was produced recently by a professor at Rowan University. His relatives still live in the Newfield and Vineland area.
All music lovers are welcome. Admission is free; a freewill offering will be received. The recital will be followed by a “Meet the Artists” reception in our CE Building across the street from the church.
The groups CD recordings will be available for purchase after the recital. One album contains 14 arrangements featuring 15 well-known songs drawn from standard hymnody. The selections span a period of some 300 years, reaching from the late 1600′s to the mid-1900′s. Artisans in Brass endeavor to display flexibility capable of the modern brass quintet with features for each instrument, the inclusion of powerful and majestic settings juxtaposed with lyrical and reflective sentiments, and contrasts between full voicings and various utilization of one, two, three, and four instruments.
