On Sunday, March 4th at 4:00PM, dynamic young musicians John-Henry Crawford, cello and Patrick Kreeger, piano, will give a recital at Deerfield Presbyterian Church. The program includes music by Beethoven, Chopin, Martinu and Grieg. Admission is free, and all music lovers are welcome.

John-Henry Crawford

John-Henry Crawford, age 19, attends the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he currently studies with Carter Brey, Principal Cellist of New York Philharmonic and Peter Wiley, formerly of the Guarneri Quartet. John-Henry holds the Nina and Billy Albert Fellowship at Curtis. With an acceptance rate of only 4 percent, Curtis is ranked the most selective college-level institution in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report (2010 edition). Curtis provides merit-based full-tuition scholarships to all its students.

In October 2011, John-Henry made his debut performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra as winner of the orchestra’s Albert M. Greenfield Concerto Competition. The Philadelphia Inquirer stated on Oct. 25th that he “projected polished charisma and a singing sound in the first movement of Prokofiev’s Symphony-Concerto.” Also in the fall 2011, he performed the Brahms B Flat Sextet at Boston’s French Cultural Museum with Malcolm Lowe, Concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Edward Gazouleas, also of the BSO, Robert Diaz, President of Curtis Institute, and members of the Borromeo Quartet.

On February 6th this year he was featured on WHYY Public Television in Philadelphia in an interview and live performance from The Curtis Institute. John-Henry has performed with Christopher O’Riley for the National Public Radio show From the Top in Dallas’s AT&T Performing Arts Center. He won Third Prize in the 2009 Music Teachers National Association Solo Competition in Atlanta, and was Bronze Medalist for the Dallas Symphony’s Lynn Harrell Competition. John-Henry is from a musical family and performs on the 191 year old European cello handed down from his Austrian grandfather and cellist Dr. Robert Popper.

Patrick Kreeger

Following his Carnegie Hall Debut at age 17, Patrick Kreeger has enjoyed a versatile career as both pianist and organist. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., he began his piano studies at age three and organ lessons at age 12 with Jim Wood, a protégé of E. Power Biggs. At age 18, Kreeger began attending the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia as a full scholarship student.

In addition to his studies at The Curtis Institute, Kreeger maintains a busy performance schedule. In demand as a soloist and chamber musician, his past and current seasons have included performances at Carnegie Hall (N.Y.), Benaroya Hall (Wash.), Meymandi Hall (N.C), St. Patrick’s Cathedral (N.Y.), Verizon Hall (Philadelphia, Pa.), Thisted Musikteater (Denmark), Peterborough Cathedral (UK), and Cook Hall (NL) as well as many other churches and performance halls in the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Denmark. In March, he will make his third appearance on stage at New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has also performed with the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra in Denver, Colorado.

Kreeger’s stylistic playing has garnered much notice and praise in numerous competitions. A first-prize winner in both the American Protégé International and Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competitions in February 2009 and May 2007, respectively, he also earned first place in the North Carolina Symphony Concerto Competition in April 2006. He was the Bronze Medalist for the 2009 Seattle International Piano Competition and the winner of the Chopin Award. Kreeger also won first prize in the 2009 Augustana/Reuter National Organ Competition. He currently serves as Director of Music & Organist at Leverington Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pa.

Evelyn Larter has just finished recording a Christmas CD on piano with a gifted young flautist. Daniel Sharp holds a Masters degree in flute performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Currently a member of New Jersey’s Symphony in C (formerly the Haddonfield Symphony), Danny was also selected to play piccolo in the YouTube Symphony last January in Sydney, Australia under Michael Tilson Thomas.

Evelyn’s ongoing jazz carol project was originally inspired by her longtime collaboration with Jazz and Gospel singer, Ruth Naomi Floyd. The focus has been mainly on choral arrangements with additional instrumental parts, so it has given her great pleasure to create solo flute versions for this recording. Danny’s virtuosity brought Evelyn’s ideas to life beyond what she could have hoped for. Tracks 2,3,5,9 and 15 have been published by Augsburg Fortress Publications as choral anthems in a booklet titled Christmas Glee – Five Little Jazz Carols; tracks 1, 6 and 11 have been issued as single anthems by Abingdon Press. Selecting additional music was also a joyful task – they both love Christmas music and Bach! It is their hope that you will enjoy the recording as much as they enjoyed creating it!

This CD can be sampled and purchased digitally on Daniel Sharp’s website and ordered through his site or Evelyn Larter’s website.
